Chris Benoit Reaction: Ex-Wife, Father Speak Out

From; The Hollywood Gossip

A couple family members of Chis Benoit are speaking out on the horrific events of the past week.

The wrestler’s former wife, Martina Benoit, said the WWE star “was the most loving person anyone could imagine. I love him.”

Reached at her home in Ardrossan, Alberta, Canada by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Benoit called reporting of the killings in Fayette County “crap.” She did not elaborate before ending the call.

The ex-wrestler had two other children with Martina Benoit, who has not remarried. Chris Benoit married Nancy Benoit in 2000.

Meanwhile, Chris’ father cannot comprehend the events that took place approximately one week ago.

“We have no understanding of why it happened,” Michael Benoit said. “We need some time to gather our thoughts and wait and see. There’s still more information that’s going to come out from toxicology tests that will give us some understanding of why this happened.”

The patriarch, who lives near Edmonton in Ardrossan, said blood test results, which could take several weeks to be completed, “could give us closure.” He said his son had seemed fine when they spoke on Father’s Day, and had even said he regretted having to work instead of spending the day with his family.

“That really wouldn’t give you an indication of someone who would do what he did a week later,” the father said.

Edmonton Sun Article: No Longer Deserving of a Tribute

By Tim Baines

So much for the Who Murdered Mr. McMahon storyline.

That went out the window when Vincent Kennedy McMahon, standing alone in the middle of a wrestling ring, somberly announced to a Monday Night RAW TV audience that Chris Benoit was dead, along with his wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel.

Little did we know that one day later police would suggest that Benoit was a murderer, who, for reasons we'll never fully know, strangled his wife and smothered his child.

Police say Benoit then killed himself.

I interviewed Chris Benoit a couple of years ago. For a guy not given much time on a WWE microphone, he was eloquent and brimming with passion for wrestling.

He seemed like a good and decent man, who put in plenty of hours of charity work and signed autographs until his hand was sore. I admired his in-ring work -- he could bring the best out of the worst.

Now, we're told, he's a murderer ... a murderer who happened to be a mighty fine wrestler.

To many, Chris Benoit was a hero, a guy who persevered and reached the pinnacle of his craft through blood, sweat and tears -- toothless aggression they labelled it.

There were Chris Benoit posters, Chris Benoit action figures and Chris Benoit T-shirts.

But there'll be no tribute here. Not when a seven-year-old boy and his mother lay dead.

An Answer From a Question in the Shoutbox...

The Following was left in the SHOUTBOX earlier today:

Guest: Matt, are you 100% convinced there were no other persons involved? What about other fingerprints at the scene,on the Bibles, etc.

Me - Well, let me be the first to say that my wife, who lives and dies with cases such as these, was the first to pose to me on Monday night when things were breaking about the chance of their being a third party involved. I have heard the theory that someone else actually killed Nancy and Daniel, and then made Chris hang himself. Could it have been over drugs? Possibly Chris owed money to someone? Maybe he got into bed with the wrong people over something and wanted payback? Sadly though, I don't buy into any of these, or any other possible theories that could involve any other parties.

Based on all that I have read and seen on hours of hours of reading and TV watching on the case, this still seems to me to be a case of a person with some serious issues going over the deep end. While I have no "inside" idea as to why, if I was a betting man, I would have to say Chris went over the edge over Daniel's condition, as well as the stress that came along with being on the road with the WWE non-stop, and yes, I also firmly believe that there was something in Chris' system that pushed him far enough to kill Nancy first, then Daniel, then himself. Sad, but that's going to be the truth in the end in my opinion.

Nancy Benoit's Parents Comment On The Tragedy

**Special Thanks to Jennifer for Emailing us the following Story**

The parents of Nancy Benoit, Paul and Maureen Toffoloni, commented publicly for the first time since the tragedy via their Atlanta-based lawyer, Richard Decker.

The Toffoloni's stated that they were unaware of their grandson's Fragile X Syndrome condition. "To them, he's always been a normal, healthy, happy child with no signs of illness," Decker said. "And that's not from a distance. That's from day-to-day contact, which included babysitting Daniel often.

Nancy's parents are "grieving and trying to keep a low profile." The Toffoloni's have asked Decker to investigate a possible civil lawsuit, and he is waiting for the investigation to conclude.

"We're trying to stay out of their way right now," Decker said. "In the meantime, Maureen and Paul and Sandra [Nancy's sister] have asked me to ask members of the media and public to remember that this is an investigation of the death of their daughter and only grandchild. And even though Chris and Nancy led public lives, the family, specifically Daniel, did not lead a public life."

The comments were published by ESPN's web site.

Friday Update; Last pic taken of Benoit

Greetings once again wrestling fans. Here we are four days after the tragic end to a family, and tonight things try somehow to get back to normal with SmackDown that was taped on Tuesday before the ECW in which Vince McMahon announced that Chris Benoit's name would no longer be mentioned on WWE TV. The photo above was the last known photo of Chris, and was obtained by WSB-TV in Goergia. It was taken by a female wrestling fan at Dr.Phil Astin's office on Friday morning, in what reports say was just hours before he took Nancy's life.

So much more about the case continues to come out as we speak. They raided Benoit's doctors office on Thrusday, and then again today, trying to come up with what he may have been prescribing Chris. Word today is that Astin also has dealt with other wrestlers, so there may be a lot more coming of this before it's all over.

I watched loudmouth Nancy Grace on CNN last night. Man, how annoying is that woman?! It's funny to me how a reporter like Grace suddenly acts like she knows all about wrestling and gives this attitude that she knows what could make someone like Benoit do what he did. The most interesting part of the show was the interview that they did with Chris Jerhico. Y2J looked great, and I thought he shed some light on things in and out of the ring. The best part was him putting to rest the whole thing that Chris was "demoted' to ECW, and was to become a coach. Jerhico cleared that up, stating how Chris was to be champ, and in no way was it a demotion.

They also announced today that the person who put the whole thing on Wikipedia about Nancy being dead 12 hours before they found her body admitted that he had no real knowledge about the situation. He had heard about it in a WWE chat room during the PPV, and ran with it. Little did he realize the firestorm that he would create.

As of right now, they company is running their house shows as planned over the weekend in Texas, and then on Monday there is a "Superhow" of RAW, Smackdown and ECW in Dallas. It is kind of I think nice that all three brands will be together, as I would assume that emotions will still be at a tenious state with what took place last Monday.

That is all for now. We'll of course have more as the weekend continues.

Comments from Matt Hardy on the Benoit Tragedy

The following comes from Matt Hardy's MySpace Page:

My brief comments on this week's tragedy

Hello my friends. I hope all of you and your families are doing well. I wanted to post something based on all of the events that have taken place over the last few days. Many of you have sent me messages worrying about me and asking if I'm ok. Just so you know--I'm good, thanks for asking. I have quite a bit that I actually wanna discuss concerning the Benoit tragedy, the media's coverage of it, and what this means for the future of the business. If I am given the blessing of the powers that be in the WWE, I will write a very detailed, in-depth blog stating my unedited opinions. For now, I just wanted to address all of my friends, fans, and supporters with a summary of my feelings and thoughts.

I haven't always agreed with every decision Vince McMahon has made, but I do agree with everything he's done dealing with this situation thus far. Out of respect for the sudden death of Benoit's family and his contributions to the business, I think Vince did the right thing by canceling the scheduled Raw. When the decision was made to make Raw a Chris Benoit tribute show, the WWE was only doing what seemed respectful and right at that time. When more information was discovered, the WWE took a different and appropriate stance towards their programming. The ECW and Smackdown shows this week were dedicated to our great fans. Wrestling fans who were grieving and confused over this tragedy needed us, including me, to entertain them. I feel it is my responsibility, as well as my pleasure, to put smiles on people's faces and give them an escape from reality. I know Vince feels that way as well.

Chris Benoit was always kind, considerate, and professional when I interacted with him. Like everyone else, I was shocked when everything came out. I can't believe Chris Benoit and his wife and child are dead as I type this. As of now, all of the strange pieces of this puzzle haven't been put together yet. My thoughts and prayers go out to Benoit's other two children as well as the immediate family and friends of the deceased. More than anything, I feel terrible for little Daniel--he was as innocent as any human being could possibly be. This is a terrible and sad tragedy.

I am very disappointed with how many media outlets are lapping the entire population of professional wrestlers into this situation. There are many outstanding, wonderful people that do so many great things for the world that I work and wrestle with. It's not fair or accurate.

Tell the people you love that you love them, and never lose sight of what's really important in life. We may not ever understand why this tragedy happened, but we have to learn from it. Stay strong--life is too precious and too short. I have much more I want to say about the activities of the last few days. If it's appropriate, I definitely will. Be well my friends, I'll talk to you soon...

Web Time Stamps Indicate Benoit Death Reported About 14 Hours Before Police Found Bodies

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,287194,00.html

An anonymous user operating a computer traced to Stamford, Conn. — home to World Wrestling Entertainment — posted an entry to pro wrestler Chris Benoit's biography on Wikipedia.org announcing the death of his wife Nancy about 14 hours before police in suburban Atlanta said they found her body along with her husband's and that of their 7-year-old son, FOXNews.com has learned.

Employees at Wikipedia.com said the posting went live on their site on Monday at 12:01 a.m. Eastern Standard Time. Police, however, said they found the bodies Monday at 2:30 p.m. EDT.

Wikipedia.org's computers are set to record Standard and Universal Time, a spokesman told FOXNews.com.

The posting reads: “Chris Benoit was replaced by [[Johnny Nitro]] for the ECW Championship match at Vengeance, as Benoit was not there due to personal issues, stemming from the death of his wife Nancy.”

The posting was apparently made in reference to Benoit's scheduled appearance on Sunday night at an Extreme Championship Wrestling event in Texas, with the last phrase noted in red to indicate an edit made to the original entry.

An employee from Wikipedia.org told FOXNews.com that he called and left a message with investigative authorities in Fayetteville, Ga., at around 11 a.m. EDT on Tuesday, after the posting was brought to the attention of the St. Petersburg, Fla.-based Web site.

“I chat with other editors on IRC -- Internet relay chat -- and somebody pointed it out to me on a relay chat and that it came from a Stamford connection, and that it took place at midnight Eastern Standard Time on Monday morning,” said Wikipedia.org volunteer coordinator Cary Bass. “I called and left a message with the police department.”

The computer-generated time and date stamp of the Benoit entry are listed as 4:01, 25 June 2007. Wikipedia.org lists its entries according to Universal Time, also known as Greenwich Mean Time.

A message left by FOXNews.com with Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department was not immediately returned.

Investigators so far have ruled the Benoit killings as a double homicide-suicide.

Wikipedia.org claims to be one of the largest reference Web sites, and is written collaboratively by users from around the world. Approved users can make submissions and change entries that are posted on the site almost immediately. Bass said the site is constantly monitored to correct inaccuracies.

Bass said when there is a high-profile case, such as the Benoit killlings, Wikipedia.org limits postings to registered users, which is now indicated at the top of the Benoit entry. According to the listed history on the Benoit entry, the computer used to post the 12:01 a.m. entry had a Stamford, Conn., Internet Protocol — or IP — address, a numeric designation that is assigned to every computer with an Internet connection, and that same address has been used to post about a dozen other messages on the site, dating back to May 16, 2007.

FOXNews.com also has learned, through widely posted Web reports, that former pro wrestler Sherri Martel, who was found dead on June 15, was linked to former wrestler Kevin Sullivan — ex-husband of Nancy Benoit.

Martel, who had a reputation as one of the top managers in pro wrestling, was found dead at her mother’s home in near Birmingham, Ala., on June 15. She was 49.

Investigators, who have not yet determined Martel's cause of death, say foul play is not suspected but that Martel did not die of natural causes.

As a Wrestling Fan...How do you Feel Today?

Other than the opening of the show, did you watch ECW? If you did, how did you feel as the show went on? I will gladly admit that the last 72 hours things in the world of wrestling have taken a 180 degree turn. Everytime you turn on a talk show, a news show, or just walk into a gas station, people are talking about the unreal events that took place over the weekend at the home of Chris Benoit. Even if people do not know the name of Benoit, or watches wrestling, they know about what happened Monday.

So today, I ask you - how do you feel about the sport? Do you feel the same way you did Sunday? Will the sport ever actually be the same again? I can't honestly answer that question today. It's too soon in my mind what the long term impact of the Benoit murders will have on the sport and on the fans. I am not trying to sit here and actually think that the sport won't go on, cripe, they already did a show on Tuesday night, but I guess what will be almost perplexing to watch is the emotion that goes along with it.

I did watch the Cena-Nitro match on ECW Tuesday. I don't know why, other than to maybe make myself believe that it was just another show. No, this was not just another show. This was the show that supposed to be Benoit's crowning moment as the new ECW Champion. This was the show that was supposed to be payback for him for all those days and months of playing pet to the bookers and writers. Bottom line, Benoit was going to be champion again, and the sport was going to be better for it.

Now though, it's gone. All in a blink of an eye, three lives, the life of Chris, his wife, and young son are gone. This was not like the three got into an accident, or were killed in a plane crash. It was worse. 22 years in a ring, night after night of putting your body on the line, and for it to be gone like this. This wasn't the way it was supposed to happen. These things are not supposed to happen. Benoit was never a loose cannon, he was not a man that was supposed to be capable of doing this. Instead, as more and more about his inner demons and what may have triggered this comes out, you have to wonder just what type of man Benoit was.

Sposual abuse, restraining orders, violence in the home. Who would have thought it? Now there is the "X" factor that has come out about young Daniel. A precious 7-year old boy who according to some reports was suffering from being undersized as well as possibly even having mental issues. Trust me, it doesn't make what Chris did right. By no means does anyone have the right to take another persons life. But it does to a small extent shed a little light on what may have been going on in Chris' head as Friday came along.

So now, some three days later, how as a fan do you feel? Are you going to be able to enjoy the shows as much as you did before? Can things for the company ever go back to normal? Though this all, that may be the most telling part of this tragedy - how does Joe wrestling fan look at the sport now? I know personally, watching Friday and Monday is not going to feel the same as it did a week ago. I don't know if it ever will. At least it won't for sometime.

AP Article - Wrestler and Wife Argued Over Child Care

ATLANTA (AP) -- In the days before pro wrestler Chris Benoit killed his wife and child and hanged himself, the couple argued over whether he should stay home more to take care of their mentally retarded 7-year-old son, an attorney for the wrestling league said Wednesday.

"I think it's fair to say that the subject of caring for that child was part of what made their relationship complicated and difficult, and it's something they were both constantly struggling with," said Jerry McDevitt, an attorney for World Wrestling Entertainment. "We do know it was a source of stress and consternation."

McDevitt said the wrestling organization learned from the couple's friends and relatives that the Benoits were struggling with where to send the boy to school since he had recently finished kindergarten.

He also said Benoit's wife didn't want him to quit wrestling, but she "wanted him to be at home more to care for the kid. She'd say she can't take care of him by herself when he was on the road."

The child suffered from a rare medical condition called Fragile X Syndrome, an inherited form of mental retardation often accompanied by autism, McDevitt said.

Over the past weekend, authorities said, Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with a weight-machine cable in the couple's suburban home. No motive was offered for the killings, which were discovered Monday.

Anabolic steroids were found in Benoit's home, leading officials to wonder whether the drugs played a role in the slayings. Some experts believe steroids cause paranoia, depression and violent outbursts known as "roid rage."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a news release Tuesday saying steroids "were not and could not be related to the cause of death" and that the findings indicate "deliberation, not rage." It also added that Benoit tested negative April 10, the last time he was tested for drugs.

Also Wednesday, Benoit's personal physician said the wrestler did not give any indication he was troubled when he met with the doctor hours before the start of the weekend.

Benoit had been under the care of Dr. Phil Astin, a longtime friend, for treatment of low testosterone levels. Astin said the condition likely originated from previous steroid use.

Astin prescribed testosterone for Benoit in the past but would not say what, if any, medications he prescribed the day of their meeting.

"He was in my office on Friday to stop by just to see my staff," Astin said. "He certainly didn't show any signs of any distress or rage or anything."

"I'm still very surprised and shocked, especially with his child Daniel involved," Astin said. "He worshipped his child."

District Attorney Scott Ballard said the autopsy indicated that there were no bruise marks on the child's neck, so authorities are now assuming he could have been killed using a choke hold. "It's a process of elimination," he said.

The Benoits' argument over their son was not the only friction in their marriage. Nancy Benoit had filed for a divorce in 2003, saying the couple's three-year marriage was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment." She later dropped the complaint.

Meanwhile, authorities in Georgia were investigating a link between Benoit and a Florida business that may have supplied him with steroids.

Prosecutors in upstate New York who have been investigating the company's drug sales said Benoit received deliveries from Signature Pharmacy and MedXLife.com, which sold steroids, human growth hormone and testosterone on the Internet.

Six people, including two of the pharmacy's owners, have pleaded guilty in the investigation, and 20 more have been arrested, including doctors and pharmacists.

"That's something that sounds like we ought to be investigating," Ballard told the AP on Wednesday.

A lawyer for MedXLife co-owner Dr. Gary Brandwein scoffed at allegations that his client's company sold steroids to Benoit.

"I've only read that in the paper. I have no direct information about that whatsoever," Terence Kindlon said Wednesday, adding that prosecutors in Albany County, N.Y., were trying to "distract everyone's attention from the fact that their case is disintegrating."

Brandwein, a 44-year-old osteopath from Boca Raton, Fla., has pleaded not guilty to six counts in New York state court related to the criminal sale of a controlled substance. He was accused of signing and sending prescriptions without ever seeing patients.

Telephone messages left for attorneys for Brian Schafler and Greg Trotta - two other co-owners of MedXLife - were not immediately returned Wednesday. The two men have pleaded guilty to felony third-degree diversion of prescription medications and prescriptions, admitting they helped get drugs in 2006 for customers in upstate New York who had no medical need for them.

McDevitt said the drugs found in Benoit's house were legitimately prescribed. "There's no question, none of these drugs are out there, none of these drugs came from Internet pharmacies," he said.

In addition to causing paranoia and explosive outbursts, steroids can also contribute to deep depression, according to experts.

"Just as you have the extreme high of when you're on steroids, you can get the opposite," said Dr. Todd Schlifstein, a clinical assistant professor at the New York University School of Medicine. "You can have a dramatic difference in mood swings. You can feel there's no hope, there's no future."

Me and Benoit - WrestleMania 18 Toronto CN, March 2002

The picture you see above is myself with Chris Benoit, taken March 15th, 2002 at the Fanfest in Toronto leading up to WrestleMania 18. The pic was taken for charity, as for $10 you could get your pic with Benoit or Big Show. I don't recall any great facts from meeting Chris, other than he shook my hand and we made small talk for a few seconds before the pic. Still hard to believe that he's gone. Also below is an email I got earlier today from a close friend, who is by no means a wrestling fan, who shares an interesting view on the sports and wrestling world and his view of this current situation:

"As I said yesterday, we all have demons, some just have deeper ones than others. At Times like this it truly is tough to make sense of things, why bad things happen to good people. But you have the right mind set. Remember the things that you admired about Benoit and gave you enjoyment. You know we in the Sports Media have to deal with a very strange breed of animal. Athletes are told to be leaders, yet they have to follow rules in lock step fashion, that concept alone is kind of mind bending . They are filled with Testosterone and Adrenaline while on the court, field, ring, and then expected to calm down and interact with us ten minutes after they leave their venues, It is really surprising that we get as many civil people in the locker rooms that we do. Now Amp that up 1000 fold for Boxers, and Wrestlers, these folks are literally sometimes foaming at the mouth, in wrestling is it an act, well we all know it is to a certain extent. But still to put on the show that they do there has to be at least a ramp up in emotions, I mean even if the guy across the ring from you is a good friend. With the passion and yelling from the crowds, that alone is going to take you to another mindset, probably like Gladiators facing the lions. And then when it is over, they are supposed to take off their trunks, and go back to being a civil law abiding member of society. It's almost surprising when you break it down like this that so many athletes keep it in check. And there are only two people that truly know what led this sad man to do this, he and his wife. Did he just snap, were there extenuating circumstances, unfortunately we will probably truly never know. Especially for someone like you who takes religion so deeply, it must be the ultimate mind bender, how could a loving and just Divine Being allow things like this to happen. Well unfortunately deep down we are all creatures of free will, and we all make mistakes, sometime with very deep and tragic ramifications. I guess at times like these we just have to appreciate even more the gifts we have, Kristin (my wife) for you, Polly (his wife) for me, and we are two of the luckiest guys on the planet to do something we love as our jobs. If there is a divine plan, maybe that is why things like this happen, so we can take a moment to step back and realize the gifts we have. Hopefully this puts things maybe in a better perspective for you. Let me know if you need to talk, and say a prayer for me tonight at church in his memory. JSS"

Wrestling Observer's Latest on a Motive for the Benoit Murder

The following was posted at WrestlingObserver.com at 5:07 this afternoon

There are other details soon to surface nationally about the murder/suicide that include details about Nancy Benoit spoke with Astin the day before her murder to try and gain information about treating her son Daniel. WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt told me the promotion has information stating Daniel was suffering from Fragile X, which is an inherited mental impairment that causes autistic-like symptoms [more information about the disease can be found at FragileX.org]. McDevitt said it’s believed that Nancy Benoit was struggling trying to cope with Daniel and that neck surgery she had undergone wasn’t make the situation any easier for her and Chris.

One question that can be posed is this: If Chris Benoit killed his wife stemming from a confrontation about Daniel, did he later kill his son because of concerns about who would take care of a needs child while he was in prison? While this doesn’t make Benoit’s actions any more justifiable, the scenario may shed some light on why Chris Benoit killed his son before taking his own life.

Murder-suicide rocks wrestling fans, Fayette

By KEVIN DUFFY, KATHY JEFCOATS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
Published on: 06/27/07

In the ring, wrestler Chris Benoit, the "Canadian Crippler," would vault from the ropes to pancake an opponent. Or grab a wrestler from behind before slamming him to the mat.

It was all in fun, part of the smackdown entertainment that millions of wrestling fans enjoy.

And Benoit was one of the best, crowned World Wrestling Entertainment champion in 2004. He performed on pay-per-view events that were broadcast worldwide.

But away from the limelight, the 40-year-old Fayette County resident was struggling with family issues he couldn't defeat. The results were tragic.

Over the weekend, Benoit strangled his wife, Nancy Benoit, 43, and smothered their son, Daniel, 7, and placed Bibles next to their bodies before hanging himself with cord from a weight machine, authorities said Tuesday.

She was found in an upstairs den at the family's 2-year-old traditional frame home, wrapped in a towel, her wrists and feet bound. Daniel, who had recently completed classes at the First Baptist Church school in Peachtree City, was in his bed.

Fayette County Sheriff's Lt. Tommy Pope said steroids were found at the house.

"There were some prescription medications ... that we believe at this time were legal prescriptions," Pope said.

Toxicology test results may not be available for weeks or even months, said District Attorney Scott Ballard. As for whether steroids played a role in the crime, he said: "We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at."

Benoit received drug deliveries from a Florida business that sold steroids, human growth hormone and testosterone on the Internet, according to the Albany County, N.Y., District Attorney's Office, which is investigating the business, MedXLife.com.

Six people, including two of the pharmacy's owners, have pleaded guilty in the investigation, and 20 more have been arrested, including doctors and pharmacists.

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a statement Tuesday saying steroids "were not and could not be related to the cause of death."

"The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage," the company said, adding that Benoit tested negative April 10, the last time he was tested for drugs.

Police said Benoit, a native of Montreal, probably killed his wife of seven years Friday and his son Saturday before hanging himself in the basement of their home Saturday.

No note was left, and people who knew Benoit were at a loss to explain the carnage.

"The Chris I know couldn't have done this," said James Robison, a manager at Partners Pizza in Peachtree City, where the Benoits would go on the Fourth of July before the fireworks began.

"They'd sit right over there in that booth," he said, pointing to a booth by the window in the shopping center restaurant. "I definitely won't be here on that night. It'll be too painful."

"I met them in 2004 and I used to tease Chris about wrestling being fake," said Angela Hall, holding a disposable camera and wiping away tears during a visit to the Benoit home Tuesday. She knew them as shoppers at the Publix just outside Peachtree City, where she worked at the deli. "I told him, 'You sure make it look real.' "

"It's indescribable," she said of the killings. "I still don't believe it.'

The Rev. Kenneth Brown, pastor of First Baptist Church, called them "a regular family." First Baptist school workers are putting together information packets to help parents and children deal with the grief.

Deputies went to check on Benoit after his employer, World Wrestling Entertainment, told them he had missed out-of-state engagements. Benoit failed to appear at Saturday's live wrestling event in Beaumont, Texas, and at WWE's "Vengeance: Night of Champions" in Houston on Sunday night. WWE told Sunday's pay-per-view fans that Benoit had a "family emergency."

The Benoits had been together since 1997 and were married in 2000. He had two other children from a former marriage.

Benoit met his future wife while wrestling for Ted Turner's defunct World Championship Wrestling.

At the time, she was Nancy Sullivan, married to someone else and managing several wrestlers under the stage name "Woman."

Her then-husband dreamed up a story line in which she and Benoit were romantically involved. That fantasy soon turned to reality.

Signs of trouble in the Benoit marriage became apparent in May 2003, when Nancy Benoit filed for divorce and sought court protection from her husband.

In the protective order petition, she said Benoit "lost his temper and threatened to strike the petitioner and cause extensive damage to the home."

But three months later, the couple reconciled and the petition was dismissed.

Chris Benoit's only other known brush with the legal system occurred in September 1998, when Peachtree City police arrested him on a DUI charge.

He was observed parked late at night in front of a house on Fairfield Drive. "Mr. Benoit stated that he used to live in the house until his divorce a year ago," the police report says. "He stated he was sitting there 'reminiscing.' "

The Benoits lived on eight acres in a semi-rural area east of Peachtree City. Their house, soft brown with white trim, is set well back from the road behind a stacked stone wall and iron gate.

Dave Meltzer, publisher of the Wrestling Observer newsletter, said medication is a part of the pro wrestling culture. Benoit broke his neck about six years ago, which put him out of action for more than a year.

"I know [his wife] was concerned about the drugs -- painkillers and the steroids," Meltzer said. "That was a problem."

Early Sunday, two co-workers received a series of text messages from the cell phones of Benoit and his wife. Most stated his home address in Fayetteville, about 20 miles south of Atlanta. One message from Benoit's phone said: "The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open," according to WWE. The prosecutor said the messages appeared to be an attempt to get someone to the home to find the bodies after his suicide.

The boy had old needle marks in his arms, Ballard said. He said he had been told the parents considered him undersized and had given him growth hormones.

"The boy was very small, even dwarfed," Ballard said.

Benoit was just under 6 feet and about 230 pounds. Meltzer said he was a wrestler's wrestler, more technique than show.

"He wasn't the biggest star," he said, "but if you ask me who the best wrestler was ... that would be the name I would say -- Chris Benoit."

While a teenager in Edmonton, Alberta, Benoit fell in love with wrestling after seeing the Dynamite Kid.

He wrestled in Japan in the early 1990s as the Pegasus Kid before heading to the United States in 1994 and becoming the Canadian Crippler.

He was an "enigma," according to his attorney in the divorce proceeding, Stanley Levitt, because the Crippler "was one of the most gentle and soft-spoken people I had run across in a very long time."

Robison, the pizza manager, would agree. They met several years ago while checking in for a tanning bed appointment. Robison joked Benoit was trying to push ahead.

"Chris just stepped back and apologized over and over again. He was so sorry," Robison recalled.

That was a far different time from last weekend.

"I know it happened," Robison said, "but it's a total mystery."

'Stone Cold' Steve Austin's Ex-Wife Claims Abuse, Steroid Use

Piece this morning from Fox Colorado regarding Debra Williams reacting to the Chris Benoit murder-suicide

by Jon Bowman

DENVER -- "He did them, I saw him do them!" said Debra Williams, ex-wife of the World Wrestling Entertainment star Stone Cold Steve Austin.

Ms. Williams says, "The domestic and drug abuse is out of hand in the WWE and something needs to be done about it."

Williams had been married to Steve McMichaels, the one-time Chicago Bear football player. When she first began working with the Atlanta-base World Championship Wrestling organization.

When that group was acquired by WWF now WWE, she divorced and married Austin.

"In the last ten years, 60 wrestlers under age 45 have died... all in the prime of their lives. Big strong men, who somehow die with little or no investigation of the organization that encourages performers to use muscle enhancing drugs," said Williams.

Steroids have been linked to the deaths of several professional wrestlers in recent years. Eddie Guerrero, one of Benoit's best friends, died in 2005 from heart failure linked to long-term steroid use.

The father of Curt "Mr. Perfect" Hennig blamed steroids and painkillers for Hennig's drug overdose death in 2003. Davey Boy Smith, the "British Bulldog," died in 2002 from heart failure

that a coroner said was probably caused by steroids.

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., issued a statement Tuesday evening saying steroids "were not and could not be related to the cause of death."

But "roid rage" is common among those who take the drugs to make their bodies bigger and stronger.

Ms. Williams claims she and Nancy Benoit's stories are very similar.

Both sought help from law enforcement because of domestic abuse. In 2003, Benoit sought a divorce from Chris Benoit saying he physically abused her, she also asked the courts for a restraining order. Williams did the same thing on the third occasion when she says she was attacked by ‘Stone Cold.’

Williams says, like Benoit, Austin all but forced her to write a letter to authorities saying her complaint was a mistake. But in Williams’ case, the courts put Austin on probation for a year. In return, Ms. Williams was placed under a gag order, forcing her to remain silent about the "dark side" of professional wrestling, filled with drugs, booze and domestic abuse.

"If only I had spoken up sooner, maybe Nancy and her little boy would be alive today... that's why I'm going public now, something has to change!"

How Will You Remember Chris Benoit?

Winnipeg Sun: Don't celebrate Benoit ... mourn slain wife, child

http://winnipegsun.com/Sports/OtherSports/2007/06/27/4293418-sun.html

By TIM BAINES

Chris Benoit was a wrestling legend.

He was a champion, a warrior whose tenacity and dedication made him one of wrestling's greatest technicians.

He was also a husband and a father.

And now it looks like he was a killer, too.

Benoit, his wife Nancy and seven-year-old son Daniel were found dead in their Atlanta-area home Monday afternoon.

Nancy was found with her wrists bound. She had been strangled. Daniel was found in his bed, the life smothered out of his tiny lungs. Bibles had been placed beside both bodies.

Benoit was found in his weight room, hanging from a pulley.

To World Wrestling Entertainment's credit, it cancelled the Monday night RAW card. This is the same WWE that went on with its regular show the night Owen Hart was killed when he plummeted to the ring from the rafters.

Instead, WWE aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit.

A tribute to Benoit?

If we are to believe the pieces of the puzzle that investigators have strung together, Benoit killed his wife, then his child. Murdered them.

This isn't another whacked-up WWE storyline. This is real life.

Wrestling websites are full of tributes to Benoit's successes -- the championship belts, his classic matches, the kind of character he was. It all seems kind of hollow now.

Prescription steroids were found in the house. Was it 'roid rage? Most of us will never know the mental and physical anguish that go along with being a professional wrestler. Night after night, Benoit put life and limb on the line, his body run into ring posts, folding metal chairs cracked over his head.

But there can never be an excuse to take the lives of two people who should have been so precious.

Chris Benoit will continue to be hailed as a hero, a legend who wore tights to work every night.

But, really, it looks like all he turned out to be was a killer.

The bell will toll 10 times in tribute to the "great" Chris Benoit.

But it's not Benoit, the troubled soul, we should remember -- it's the helpless wife and especially the child, who never had a chance to be great.

LA Times Article: A Fatal Weekend Fueled by Steroids?

http://www.latimes.com/sports/printedition/la-sp-wrestling27jun27,1,1188066.story?coll=la-headlines-pe-sports

By Lance Pugmire, Times Staff Writer

Sports officials are bracing for the results after law enforcement officials in Georgia said Tuesday that they will investigate whether steroids played a role in a grisly murders-suicide involving pro wrestling star Chris Benoit over the weekend.

Prescription anabolic steroids were found inside the Fayetteville , Ga., home where Benoit, 40, strangled his former wrestler wife and 7-year-old son before apparently hanging himself with the cord of a weightlifting machine, police said.

"I don't know that we'll ever determine why [Benoit] did this," Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said in a telephone interview. "The toxicology reports will shed some light, but we'll need to consult experts on all sorts of things about this, including what concentrations of steroids equal a 'roid rage."

Benoit, who went by the nickname "Canadian Crippler," was a star attraction on the World Wrestling Entertainment circuit and was described by one fervent wrestling follower as "the best in-ring wrestler of the last 20 years." He was remembered on a WWE "tribute" broadcast on USA Network on Monday night, as many wrestling fans learned of the wrestler's death from WWE chairman Vince McMahon.

McMahon opened Tuesday night's Extreme Championship Wrestling show by announcing that because of emerging details of the deaths Benoit's name would not be mentioned again during the telecast. However, WWE officials also expressed concern "with sensationalistic reporting" about the steroid discovery.

"The physical findings … indicate deliberation, not rage," a statement from the organization said. WWE also noted that Benoit tested negative for steroids in the organization's drug testing program on April 10.

In light of at least 27 deaths of pro wrestlers 45 years old or younger since 1997, McMahon recently reacted angrily when questioned about the legitimacy of his health and safety concerns for his wrestlers. "If people die, they can't perform for you," he said in a 2003 investigative story by The Times. "From the human being's perspective, how do you think I feel [about the deaths]? Do you think I'm the … devil?"

Although California's State Athletic Commission does not test script-performing pro wrestlers for performance-enhancing drugs, as it does test boxers and mixed-martial arts fighters. Commission official William Douglas said Benoit's death illustrates "there's a rampant problem; this is getting pretty scary."

The Associated Press reported late Tuesday that the Albany, N.Y., County district attorney has identified Benoit as a customer of a Florida company, MedXLife, implicated in an investigation of illegal steroid sales.

As details of the deaths emerged Tuesday, pro wrestling observers weren't ready to attribute what one called "a Charles Manson-O.J. Simpson thing," solely to the effects of steroids, which medical experts say can cause explosive mood swings.

"The wrestling guys who have died at 40 usually just have a heart attack and die young," said Bryan Alvarez, 32, an independent pro wrestler and friend of Benoit's. "But we know Chris had problems with his wife. If you ask me, I believe this was a combination of 20 years of steroid abuse, several years of a work schedule where brain trauma becomes possible, and the problems with his wife.

"Blaming steroids alone is too simplistic, but I guarantee you the toxicology shows steroids in his system."

The medical examiner working the case determined that Benoit killed his wife, Nancy, on Friday, then his son late the following day.

District Attorney Ballard said Nancy Benoit, 43, formerly known on the World Championship Wrestling circuit as the character "Woman," was found in an upstairs office in the couple's two-story home with her feet and wrists bound.

Ballard said the medical examiner determined Daniel wasn't killed until much later — possibly late Saturday. The boy was found dead in his upstairs bedroom. Authorities noticed injection marks on the boy's arm that appear to be the result of routine medical treatments.

"A chokehold," Ballard said, "was used to strangle the boy rather than hands, because there's no bruising consistent with a strangling by hands."

Benoit's signature match-ending hold was called the "cross-face crippler," where he'd cross his arms at an opponent's chin, pulling the head backward.

A Bible was placed near Nancy and Daniel's bodies, authorities said.

Benoit dispatched five text messages to two WWE co-workers early Sunday morning. The WWE released transcripts of those messages Tuesday, in which Benoit reported his full home address to the workers, and said, "The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open."

Ballard said he's "virtually certain" that Benoit committed suicide Sunday by undoing a weightlifting machine lifting bar and wrapping the steel cord around his cloth-wrapped neck in the home's basement.

Fayette County court records made public Tuesday showed Nancy Benoit filed for divorce and sought a restraining order after a 2003 incident. She claimed in the court records posted by the website TMZ.com that Chris Benoit "lost his temper and threatened to strike [her] and cause extensive damage to the home and personal belongings of the parties."

Nancy Benoit also claimed her husband had followed through on similar threats "at other times," destroying furniture.

The petition said Nancy Benoit was "in reasonable fear for [her] safety and the safety of the minor child," noting "there is substantial likelihood [Chris Benoit] will commit such acts of violence against [Nancy] and the child [Daniel]."

In her May 2003 divorce filing, Nancy Benoit claimed her marriage was "irretrievably broken" and that she was subjected to "cruel treatment" by her wrestler husband.

The restraining order and divorce complaint were dismissed by Nancy in August 2003.

"Steroids alone don't cause this," said Dave Meltzer, editor of the website Wrestling Observer. "The guy clearly had a stormy, volatile relationship with his wife. Because of the road schedule, lots of [wrestlers] have marriage issues. Steroids maybe played a role, but I don't know what this is. To kill your kid … this is some demon I can't explain, and I don't think anyone in wrestling can."

Benoit Article with some Interesting Tidbits on the Bibles; Timeframe

Atlanta, Georgia - Pro wrestler Chris Benoit allegedly suffocated his seven-year-old son and placed a Bible next to the body before using an exercise machine to hang himself, authorities said on Tuesday.

Law enforcement officials believe Daniel Benoit was killed on Saturday, one day after Benoit also allegedly strangled his 43-year-old wife, Nancy, in the upstairs family room of their luxury rural home.

Another Bible was placed next to her lifeless body which was wrapped in a towel, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Tuesday.

The three bodies were found in separate rooms of the house on Green Meadow Lane in Peachtree City in what police are calling a double-murder suicide that stretched through the weekend.

"Bizarre. That's the only way I can describe this," Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard told the Fayette Daily News.

"What's most bizarre to me is the timing and the circumstances. Not just that a man could kill his own seven-year-old son but that he could have stayed in the same house with the bodies.

"And then there's the placement of the Bibles. I can't understand this."

Law enforcement authorities said steroids were discovered at the home along with the bodies on Monday and they are probing whether this may have been a factor in the deaths.

Steroids have been linked to the recent deaths of several pro wrestlers.

News of the murder-suicide has turned the professional wrestling world upside down.

The World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) aggressively defended its drug-testing programme on Tuesday.

"We strongly suggest that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts," the WWE said on its web site.

The WWE said the placing of Bibles next to bodies was not something an angry person would do.

"The presence of a Bible by each is not an act of rage," the WWE said. "The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death.

"By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage."

The WWE said Benoit was tested under their drug-testing programme as recently as April and passed.

The 40-year-old Benoit was born in Montreal, Canada and moved to Calgary in the mid-1980s where he got his start in professional wrestling under the late Stu Hart. Benoit later wrestled professionally with the New Japan Pro Wrestling before joining the WWE in 2000.

Benoit was scheduled to appear in a pay-per-view title match on Sunday, but at the time the WWE announced he couldn't attend because of a "family emergency".

Benoit went by the ring name the "Canadian Crippler" and his signature moves included a flying headbutt, the triple German suplex and the "Crippler Crossface".

WWE.Com Posts Two Very Important Posts on the Benoit Tragedy

The WWE, in trying to move forward as well as keep fans informed about their knowledge of the situation in the Chris Benoit case, have posted two pieces on their webiste in the last hour of note. The first of which was the speech taht Vince McMahon gave at the start of ECW to the TV viewers. Here is that speech:

"Last night on Monday Night Raw, the WWE presented a special tribute show, recognizing the career of Chris Benoit. However, now some 26 hours later, the facts of this horrific tragedy are now apparent. Therefore, other than my comments, there will be no mention of Mr. Benoit tonight. On the contrary, tonight's show will be dedicated to everyone who has been affected by this terrible incident. This evening marks the first step of the healing process. Tonight, the WWE performers will do what they do better than anyone else in the world--entertain you."

The second piecce is a timeline, along with the cell phone text messages that Benoit left co-workers, one of which reportedly was Chavo Guerrero. Here is that piece:

On Saturday, June 23, Chris Benoit was slated to appear at a WWE live event in Beaumont, Texas. That afternoon, Benoit contacted WWE to inform them that his wife and child were ill, and that he would not be able to attend the show.

WWE executives rebooked Benoit’s flight for the following morning, allowing Benoit to miss the Beaumont event making alternate arrangements for him to attend the pay-per-view event in Houston on Sunday.

WWE employees attempted to confirm with Benoit his travel plans but were unable to contact him.

Early Sunday morning, between 3:51 and 3:58 a.m., Benoit sent five text messages to co-workers:

Text Message 1 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53am)- Chris Benoit’s cell phone
“My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane, Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”

Text Message 2 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:53am)- Chris Benoit’s cell phone
“The dogs are in the enclosed pool area. Garage side door is open”

Text Message 3 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:54am)- Nancy Benoit’s cell phone
“My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane.
Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”

Text Message 4 to two co-workers (sent 6/24 at 3:55am)- Nancy Benoit’s cell phone
“My physical address is 130 Green Meadow Lane.
Fayetteville Georgia. 30215"

Text Message 5 to one co-worker (sent 6/24 at 3:58am)- Nancy Benoit’s cell phone
“My address is 130 Green Meadow Lane. Fayetteville Georgia. 30215”

Throughout the day on Sunday, WWE made numerous attempts to contact Benoit both at home and at local hospitals in the Atlanta area. As of 11:00 p.m., WWE officials were unable to establish contact with Chris Benoit.

At 12:30 p.m. on Monday, June 25, WWE officials were notified of the text messages sent to the co-workers the previous day. By 12:45 p.m., WWE had contacted Fayetteville County Sheriff’s office requesting they check on the Benoit family.

Fayetteville County Sheriffs office made contact with WWE at approximately 4:00 p.m. advising that they had entered the house of Chris Benoit and found three deceased bodies – an adult male, adult female and a male child. WWE was told that Benoit’s home was now considered a major crime scene.

The decision to cancel the live event scheduled in Corpus Christi that night was made between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. In keeping with company policy, and with limited knowledge regarding facts of the case, WWE choose to air a memorial dedicated to the career of Chris Benoit. As facts emerged surrounding the case, all tributes to Chris Benoit were removed both on-air and on WWE.com.

Jim Ross Talks about the Chris Benoit Tragedy

Jim Ross Posted The Following On His Website jrsbarbq.com

Jim Ross Remembers Chris Benoit

I am in shock, as I’m sure many of you are as well, at the horrific tragedy that occurred involving Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their son Daniel. I knew them all well and this is a terrible and unnecessary loss of 3 lives.

Monday in Corpus Christi was surreal and overtly challenging for everyone. Broadcasting the 3 hour tribute show on Raw seemed befitting to recognize Chris’ career, but it wasn’t an easy show to execute. As of this writing, I couldn’t pass a quiz as to what actually aired.

The details that are now coming out of the police investigation are beyond my comprehension. I don’t even know how to respond to them.

I knew Chris for many, many years and knew his wife Nancy even longer. Daniel was a precious, little gentleman.

While the news media reports on this senseless and tragic event, my thoughts turn to the families of Nancy and Chris and especially to Chris’ two other young children, David and Megan, notwithstanding the Benoit’s many friends and business associates who will miss them all so dearly.

For those of us that knew this family on a personal basis, this tragedy is especially heartbreaking. I did not sleep Monday night thinking about the last time I saw Chris, Nancy, and David. I remember the smiles on their faces. I will try and retain that memory for as long as I possibly can. This is a surreal, unfathomable occurrence. For all of those that are hurting as are my wife, Jan and me, we wish you our sincere condolences.

We are all hurting, but we all must move forward. May God Bless and comfort the Benoit family and their many friends during this time. J.R.

McMahon to Make Statement on Benoit on Tonight's ECW

The following piece was on TVWeek.com in regards to Vince coming on and making a statement on tonight's ECW.

http://tvweek.com/news/2007/06/mcmahon_to_apologize_for_benoi.php

WWE Chairman Vince McMahon will address viewer complaints about the three-hour USA Network tribute to pro wrestler Chris Benoit that aired Monday night, a WWE spokesman confirmed.

The WWE and USA Network received criticisms of the tribute, which was hastily produced after Mr. Benoit, his wife and their son were found dead in their Georgia home Monday afternoon.

Authorities said Tuesday that Mr. Benoit strangled his wife and suffocated his son, then took his own life. But WWE and network officials were unaware of the circumstances of Mr. Benoit's death when the tribute was assembled, sources said.

The WWE canceled its regularly scheduled "Monday Night RAW" event on USA Network Monday night and aired the tribute in its place.

Mr. McMahon will address wrestling fans tonight on Sci Fi Channel's live Extreme Championship Wrestling. Sources said Mr. McMahon planned to apologize for the tribute special, but a WWE spokesman said Mr. McMahon is still working on his comments and may address the issue without apologizing per se.

The WWE plans to resume its regular wrestling telecasts, which air on USA Network, Sci Fi Channel and the CW.

Earlier, the WWE issued a statement protesting media speculation that Mr. Benoit may have murdered his family due to "roid rage." Prescription anabolic steroids were found in the wrestler's home. The statement noted the drugs were legal and that toxicology tests have not been completed.

"WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts," read the statement.

WWE Puts out New Statement Regarding Media's Coverage of Tragedy

The WWE released a new statement just awhile ago about the ongoing saga of the double-murder suicide of Chris, Nancy and Daniel Benoit. The company is taking a shot back at the media in the statement, stating they have no right to say that steroids had anything to do with the murders. The article is below:

From WWE.Com

STAMFORD, Conn., June 26, 2007 – World Wrestling Entertainment is stunned and saddened by the details released by local authorities concerning the double homicide-suicide involving Chris Benoit, his wife, Nancy, and his son, Daniel.

However, WWE is concerned with the sensationalistic reporting and speculation being undertaken by some members of the media following the press conference held by the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department and the District Attorney. During the press conference, the investigating authorities made the following points, all of which run contrary to the media speculation that "roid rage" was a factor in the senseless murders and suicide:

1. The authorities stated that all drugs found in the house were believed to be legal prescriptions.

2. Steroids were not, and could not, be related to the cause of death (asphyxiation). Authorities had no factual basis to speculate as to Benoit’s state of mind, and rightly did not do so.

3. Toxicology tests have not even been completed, so there is no current evidence that Benoit even had steroids or any other substance in his body. In that regard, on the last test done on Benoit by WWE's independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative.

4. The physical findings announced by authorities indicate deliberation, not rage. The wife's feet and hands were bound and she was asphyxiated, not beaten to death. By the account of the authorities, there were substantial periods of time between the death of the wife and the death of the son, again suggesting deliberate thought, not rage. The presence of a Bible by each is also not an act of rage.

5. WWE strongly suggests that it is entirely wrong for speculators to suggest that steroids had anything to do with these senseless acts, especially when the authorities plainly stated there is no evidence that Benoit had steroids in his body, pending the toxicological reports, and that they had no evidence at this time as to the motive for these acts.

WWE is continuing to monitor the ongoing investigation being conducted by local authorities.

ESPN.com Story on Benoit with Quotes from District Attorney Ballard

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=2917133

FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. -- Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself with the pulley of a weight machine, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators found prescription anabolic steroids in the house and want to know whether the muscle man nicknamed "The Canadian Crippler" was unhinged by the bodybuilding drugs, which can cause paranoia, depression and explosive outbursts known as "roid rage."

Authorities offered no motive for the killings, which were spread out over a weekend, and would not discuss Benoit's state of mind. No suicide note was found.

"In a community like this it's bizarre to have a murder-suicide, especially involving the death of a 7-year-old," District Attorney Scott Ballard said. "I don't think we'll every be able to wrap our minds around this."

In an interview with ESPN.com on Tuesday, Ballard indicated that the boy had needle marks in his arms. The district attorney said he believed that the boy had been given growth hormones for some time because the family considered him undersized.

That was only one of the strange facts that Ballard revealed. He said that two text messages of note caused authorities to investigate the house. In one, Benoit told somebody he knew that his wife and son were sick.

"Of course, they were dead," Ballard told ESPN.com.

In a second message to a neighbor, Benoit said that the door of the house was open and the pets were outside.

"And our assumption is that that was an effort to try and get somebody to come find the bodies after the suicide," Ballard said. "That is our assumption."

The Montreal-born Benoit was one of the stars of the WWE wrestling circuit and was known for his wholesome family man image. His wife, Nancy, was a wrestling stage manager who worked under the name "Woman." They met and fell in love when their wrestling story lines intertwined.

When he won the world heavyweight championship in 2004, Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) hoisted the belt over his head and invited his wife and child into the ring to celebrate. Asked by the Calgary Sun that same year to name his worst vice: Benoit replied: "Quality time with my family is a big vice. It's something I'll fight for and crave."

Nevertheless, Nancy Benoit filed for a divorce in 2003, saying the couple's three-year marriage was irrevocably broken and alleging "cruel treatment."

She later dropped the complaint, as well as a request for a restraining order in which she charged that the 5-foot-10, 220-pound Benoit had threatened her and had broken furniture in their home.

In the divorce filing, she said Benoit made more than $500,000 a year as a professional wrestler and asked for permanent custody of Daniel and child support. In his response, Benoit sought joint custody.

The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three rooms of the house, off a gravel road.

Ballard said that Benoit's wife, 43, was killed Friday in an upstairs family room, her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle. Ballard told ESPN.com that it appeared that she had been pinned to the floor and asphyxiated with some sort of cable.

The son, Daniel, was probably killed late Saturday or early Sunday, the body found in his bed, Ballard said. The district attorney indicated that he had been choked to death.

Benoit, 40, apparently killed himself several hours and as long as a day later, Ballard said. His body was found in a downstairs weight room, his body found hanging from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment. Ballard said that he had used weights, the pulley and cable to choke himself to death.

The prosecutor said he found it "bizarre" that the WWE wrestling star spread out the killings over a weekend and appeared to remain in the house for up to a day with the bodies. Ballard told ESPN.com that investigators smelled what they ascertained to be decomposing bodies when they entered the home. The varying degrees of decomposition between the bodies helped indicate the staggered times of death.

Toxicology test results may not be available for weeks or even months, he said. As for whether steroids played a role in the crime, he said: "We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at."

Davey Boy Smith, the "British Bulldog," died in 2002 from heart failure that a coroner said was probably caused by steroids.

In a Tuesday press release, the WWE said that in its "independently administered drug testing program, done on April 10, 2007, Benoit tested negative," for steroids.

Benoit was a quiet, roughhewn figure amid the glitz and bluster of pro wrestling. He performed under his real name, eschewed scripted personas and didn't bother to fix a gap where he had lost one of his front teeth. (According to the WWE Web site, he lost the tooth while roughhousing with his pet Rottweiler.)

His signature move was the "Crippler Crossface," in which he would lock his hands around an opponent's face and stretch his neck.

He met his wife in the 1990s when she was married to rival wrestler Kevin Sullivan. As part of the scripted rivalry, Benoit and Nancy were supposed to act as if they were having an affair. A real romance blossomed, and she left Sullivan for Benoit.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

"We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm," said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. "They always seemed like they were the happiest people," he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received "several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning."

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said authorities asked that it not release further information on the deaths.

"WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy," the company said in a statement on its Web site.

"He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard," said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Benoit had maintained a home in Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.

The WWE canceled its live "Monday Night RAW" card in Corpus Christi, Texas, after the bodies were discovered.

Monday's show was supposed to be a memorial service for WWE owner Vince McMahon. In a storyline concocted by the WWE, McMahon was supposedly "assassinated" in a limousine explosion two weeks earlier. McMahon appeared at the beginning of Monday's telecast and acknowledged the bombing was made up.

The McMahon storyline has been dropped.

Benoit had two other children from a prior relationship.

More Gruesome Benoit Details; Press Conference Rundown

It seems with each passing hour, more gruesome news about the death of Chris Benoit, Nancy Benoit, and Daniel Benoit come to light. The latest comes from Wrestling Observer: "The AP reported that law enforcement officials close to the investigation have confirmed the current belief that Chris Benoit strangled wife Nancy with an electrical cord on Saturday, smothered his son with a bag on Sunday and then hung himself in his basement/weight room on Monday."

The other thing that is coming to light is the almost backwards stance that the WWE is going to have to take with this entire situation. Last night they did a 3-hour tribute show to a man that now appears to have killed his wife, 7-year-old son, and himself. At this point on the WWE.com home page, all the Tribute things that were on the right side have been removed, and the only thing left is the pic of Benoit as the top story, with a basic rundown of what took place.

WWE has gone so far as to try and promote thier own stars, as they have on the bottom right even have an option to "Learn about your favorite Superstarts from RAW, SmackDown and ECW." I will say this, they realize that there are millions coming to their site today to learn about what took place, and they are trying to make the most of it, whether you agree with it or not. They also have removed any Benoit merchandise for purhcase. His name has been taken off the option to buy anything. Benoit's name has also been taken off the ECW page.

Here is a rundown of the 3PM press conference that was done outside of the Benoit home where the murders and suicide took place:

X: Fayette (Ga.) County district attorney Scott Ballard said law enforcement officials believe Benoit killed his wife Nancy on Friday night via affixation, then did the same to Daniel on Saturday morning before hanging himself Saturday night.

X: Ballard said Nancy Sullivan’s wrists and feet were bound with tape and that there was some blood under her head. Ballard said Sullivan was found in an upstairs living room area. Daniel Benoit was found dead in his own bed in his upstairs bedroom. A bible was placed next to the body of Nancy and Daniel.

X: Benoit hung himself with a cord in his basement weight room.

X: Anabolic steroids and what was described by one law-enforcement official as “lots” of what is believed legal prescription medication were found in the house. A complete list of medications may be given to the media at a later date.

X: A WWE “co-worker” [believed Chavo Guerrero] received a text message on a delayed basis from Benoit. Officials declined to elaborate on what information the messages contained.

X: Benoit was previously arrested in the Atlanta area on a DUI charge but has no record of a previous arrest for domestic violence.

X: There was no suicide note left inside the house.

X: “In a community like this, it’s bizarre to have a murder/suicide, especially involving the death of a seven-year-old child,” Mallard said. “That’s what struck me the most in all this: There’s a seven- year-old little boy who’s dead. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to wrap my mind around that completely.”

“It struck me as somewhat bizarre that he would even be in the home with their deceased bodies all that time … I’m baffled why anyone would kill a seven year old. I don’t have any idea at all about a motive.”

Latest AP Article on Benoit Following the 3PM Press Conference

ATLANTA --Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife, suffocated his 7-year-old son and placed a Bible next to their bodies before hanging himself by the pulley of a weightlifting machine, authorities said Tuesday.

Investigators also found prescription anabolic steroids in the house, Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department. He would not comment on Benoit's state of mind or possible motive.

Autopsies showed all three died of asphyxiation, Pope said.

Benoit's wife, Nancy, was killed Friday in an upstairs family room, her feet and wrists were bound and there was blood under her head, indicating a possible struggle, Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard said.

The son, Daniel, was likely killed late Saturday or early Sunday, the body found in his bed, Ballard said.

Benoit apparently killed himself several hours and as long as a day later, Ballard said. His body was found in a downstairs weight room, his body found hanging from the pulley of a piece of exercise equipment.

The prosecutor said he found it "bizarre" that the WWE wrestling star spread out the killings over a long weekend and appeared to remain in the house for up to a day with the bodies.

"I'm baffled about why anybody would kill a 7-year-old," Ballard said. "I don't think we'll ever be able wrap our head around that."

AJC: Nancy Benoit Filed for Divorce in 2003

According to a report published by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Chris and Nancy Benoit were separated in 2003 after Nancy filed for divorce.

In an included petition for protection from domestic abuse, Nancy Benoit said Chris "lost his temper and threatened to strike the petitioner and cause extensive damage to the home and personal belongings of the parties, including furniture and furnishings. Petitioner is in reasonable fear for petitioner's own safety and that of the minor child."

On May 12, 2003, a judge issued a restraining order against Chris Benoit, barring him from the family's Peachtree City home. But, on August 19, 2003, Nancy Benoit filed to have her petitions dismissed—they were, and the couple apparently reconciled.

On Monday, June 25, 2007, the bodies of Chris, Nancy and Daniel Benoit were found in the family's Atlanta-area home. Police believe Chris Benoit killed his wife and son over the weekend, via strangulation and smothering, respectively, before taking his own life via hanging on Monday.

AP: Benoit Strangled wife, Smothered son, Hanged Himself in Weight Room

THE FOLLOWING IS THE ASSOICATED PRESS STORY ON THE BENOIT DOUBLE MURDER-SUICIDE

ATLANTA – Pro wrestler Chris Benoit strangled his wife and smothered his son before hanging himself in his weight room, a law enforcement official close to the investigation told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Authorities also said they are investigating whether steroids may have been a factor in the deaths of Benoit, his wife and their 7-year-old son. Steroid abuse has been linked to depression, paranoia, and aggressive behavior or angry outbursts known as “roid rage.”

“We don't know yet. That's one of the things we'll be looking at,” said Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard. He said test results may not be back for weeks.

Autopsies were scheduled Tuesday by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Authorities were investigating the deaths at a secluded Fayette County home as a murder-suicide and were not seeking any suspects. The official who described the manner of death spoke on the condition of anonymity because the information was to be released at a news conference later Tuesday.

Investigators believe Benoit (pronounced ben-WAH) killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, and son Daniel during the weekend and then himself Monday. The bodies were found Monday afternoon in three separate rooms of the house, off a gravel road about two miles from the Whitewater Country Club.

Fayette County Coroner C.J. Mowell did not return calls seeking comment. The answering service for his funeral home said he was out of town.

Asked about the condition of the interior of the house, sheriff's Sgt. Keith Whiteside said investigators found “nothing really out of the ordinary.” He said Benoit was found in the home's weight room, his wife in an office and the son in an upstairs bedroom.

Neighbors said the Benoits led a low-key lifestyle.

“We would see Chris walking in his yard from time to time. He wasn't rude, but he wasn't really outwardly warm,” said Alaina Jones, who lives across the street.

Jimmy Baswell, who was Benoit's driver for more than five years, placed a white wreath at the Benoits' gate. “They always seemed like they were the happiest people,” he said.

World Wrestling Entertainment said on its Web site that it asked authorities to check on Benoit and his family after being alerted by friends who received “several curious text messages sent by Benoit early Sunday morning.”

The WWE, based in Stamford, Conn., said authorities asked that it not release further information on the deaths.

Benoit, born in Montreal, was a former world heavyweight champion, Intercontinental champion and held several tag-team titles. His names in the ring included “The Canadian Crippler.”

“WWE extends its sincerest thoughts and prayers to the Benoit family's relatives and loved ones in this time of tragedy,” the company said in a statement on its Web site.

“He was like a family member to me, and everyone in my family is taking it real hard,” said fellow Canadian Bret Hart, a five-time champion with the World Wrestling Federation. The federation has since changed its name to World Wrestling Entertainment.

Benoit had maintained a home in metro Atlanta from the time he wrestled for the defunct World Championship Wrestling. The Fayette County Tax Assessors Office lists the value of the house, situated on more than 8.5 acres, at nearly $900,000.

The WWE canceled its live “Monday Night RAW” card in Corpus Christi, Texas, and USA Network aired a three-hour tribute to Benoit in place of the scheduled wrestling telecast.

Benoit's wife managed several wrestlers and went by the stage name “Woman.” They met when her then-husband drew up a script that had them involved in a relationship as part of a story line on World Championship Wrestling, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Benoit has two other children from a prior relationship.

News on Tonight's SmackDown and ECW; Personal Thoughts on the Benoit Situation

More news...and this time of a wrestling nature for tonight's SmackDown and ECW tapings in San Antonio.

First off, Wrestling Observer is reporting that the shows will go on tonight, and as we reported in all this madness early this morning, the shows will go on without it being a tribute show to Benoit, and the Vince "death" storyline (as of this moment anyway), has been scrapped.

The report says that tonight will be straight wrestling, without any sort of heavy storylines. I can imagine it being similar to the shows after the deaths of Owen Hart in 1999 and Eddie Guerrero two years ago in which the superstars basically just wrestled, and some then embraced after the matches. Ironic that the final match on SmackDown two years ago after Eddie died was HHH vs Chris Benoit, and after the match, the two hugged in the ring.

The Observer is also reporting that the one person that is really keeping things together right now is Vince McMahon. The story said that Vince was a rock yesterday, both to the wrestlers and the front office. I have no idea when things get straight how they are going to explain his limo storyline, but right now that is the least of most peoples concerns.

The other thing that will quickly become an issue, and it is starting to already, is the light that Benoit is portrayed in from here on out. If the reports are true, and he actually did murder his wife and son, then how will the WWE handle his death, and tributes to him. Some are already piling on the WWE for doing a 3-hour tribute show dedicated to the life of a "murderer" last night on RAW.

While I personally will not make any judgements, the only thing I can say at the moment is IF THIS IS TRUE, and Benoit did indeed murder his wife and child, I would have to think that there was chemicals or medication involved. I have met Chris, and have listened over the last 14 hours to so many people on the web and even last night on RAW talk about Chris in glowing terms. I cannot believe that this was somehting he could have done, but if he indeed did it, and we should know that shortly, that will make the sad demise of he and his wife and child even more tragic.

For now, I invite you to keep leaving your comments - good, bad or indifferent, on the SHOUTBOX and in the comment section of the stories. I don't think at this point anyone can judge anyone for what someone says or thinks about Benoit after all this has taken place until we for 100 percent know the facts that could come as early as today.

Benoit Strangled Wife; Son Before Hanging Himself Reports Say

Wrestling site PWTorch is reporting the following about the Chris Benoit double murder-suicide situation:

"New reports suggest that Chris Benoit strangled his wife and son, possibly a day a part. It’s also being reported that he then took his own life after he hanged himself some time Monday.

Officials are expected to release a statement sometime this morning/afternoon to further update us on new information in the case."

Details of Benoit's Double Murder-Suicide "A Little Bizarre" Says District Attorney

In what is sure to be a backlash to the sport of wrestling, the harshest details of the Chris Benoit and family double murder-suicide have yet to come out, and according to various news sources, those details are going to be very hard to swallow. According to Fayette County District Attorney Scott Ballard, he told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that "The details, when they come out, are going to prove a little bizarre."

The Associated Press is reporting that details of the deaths may come out after the completion of autopsies, which is scheduled for this morning. The autopsies are scheduled to be done at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Crime Lab in DeKalb County. Ballard was quoted in the article as saying "We're pretty sure we know (how they died), but we want to confirm it with the crime lab."

The story continues to be that Benoit killed his wife, 43-year-old Nancy, on Saturday, and then on Sunday killed his 7-year-old son Daniel. Then it is being reported that he killed himself on Monday. Last night on the 3-hour RAW tribute on USA Network, friend Chavo Guerrero said that he spoke to Benoit on Sunday and that Chris told Chavo that he loved him. Chris was set to be in Houston that night for the WWE PPV, but missed that as well as the house show the company ran in Texas on Saturday night.

Various web sites were reporting that Benoit told the WWE he would not be at the PPV on Sunday because his wife and son were "coughing up blood." If that is true, or has anything do with their deaths, is unknown. There has been conformation that no gun or blade was used in the double murder-suicide.

At this time WWE is planning on having a normal TV taping of SmackDown and ECW tonight in San Antonio. What reference they make to Benoit is yet to be determined. They also have put to rest the Vince McMahon "death" storyline, with McMahon speaking to RAW viewers last night in the ring, the storyline at this point has been dropped.

Former WWE Champion Bret Hart Speaks on Benoit's Death

As stories continue to pour in, the Calgary Sun has an interview this morning with long-time WWE star and former Champion Bret "The Hitman" Hart. Benoit and Hart had a long history with Benoit being trained by Bret's father, Stu Hart. Below is a link to the article.

The Latest on Benoit; SmackDown & ECW Tapings

As the sun on a new day on the East coast begins to rise, more information about the double murder-suicide of Chris Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their 7-year-old son, Daniel, are starting to come to light. The word from WWE.com about 4:30am this morning is that Benoit sent "several curious text messages" to VP of Government Relations Richard Hering on Sunday morning. Wrestling Observer says that Benoit also sent text messages to one of his close friends, Chavo Guerrero.

Back to Hering, he spoke with Fayetteville County sheriffs on Monday, alerting them of the messages and requesting that they respond to Benoit's home to check on him and his family. Authorities representing the Sheriff's Department entered the home after having a tough time getting in due to two large German Shepherds roaming the property. Once they got into the home, they found Benoit first, then Nancy then Daniel.

WWE was told of the discovery about 4pm Monday. The entire crew that was in Texas for the event was gathered in the ring area, where they were told of the situation. The event for last night was then cancelled, and the wrestlers were allowed to leave if they wanted. As was shown last night on RAW, several wrestlers did interviews, which has been the case upon a death in the company for a few years, starting with the Owen Hart death during "Over the Edge" back in 1999.

Last evening a press conference was held at 10pm EST with Lt. Tommy Pope of the Fayetteville County Sheriff's Department. The presser was held with Scott Ballard, the district attorney for Fayette County. The press conference confirmed that the deaths were a double murder-suicide from within the home, and WAGA-TV in Atlanta began reporting what is believed to be true, and that is Benoit killed Nancy on Saturday, Daniel Sunday, and himself yesterday.

The three bodies have been taken to Decatur, Georgia where this morning autopsies will be performed. Toxicology reports will not be released for about two weeks. According to WWE.com, they have more information about the investigation and cause of death, but they have been asked not to release any details.

As of this moment, the RAW crew is off, and the SmackDown and ECW crew will be in San Antonio tonight, where the early word is that they will tape the show as normal. They will NOT be doing any sort of Chris Tribute, nor will the McMahon storyline continue, as they appear to have dropped that in the wake of the Benoit deaths.

The interesting thing is how the company will deal with Chris' death as well as his family now that it is coming to light that it was a double murder-suicide. In the past upon wrestlers deaths, they usually do numerous tributes as well as video packages. This is the first time in memory that the company will have to deal with something as high profile as this for one of their major stars.
