Segment Set for Friday’s SmackDown, World Title Update

Vickie Guerrero announced on RAW that this week’s Friday Night SmackDown will feature the official coronation of Dolph Ziggler as the new World Heavyweight Champion. Vickie told Edge she warned Edge about using the spear and now he will lose his title.

Vickie also said Edge’s job is in jeopardy as she has evidence that he is the one who attacked Teddy Long in the ongoing storyline.

This week’s SmackDown will tape tomorrow night in San Diego, California.

Update on the Return of Edge

From: WrestleScoop.com

Edge is expected to be returning within the next few weeks. The idea originally was to have him stay gone long enough to sell the ending of the Hell in a Cell match with The Undertaker at SummerSlam but they wanted The Undertaker to be fully established in a new program before bringing him back. Edge was banged up but there was no serious injury that has kept him out this time.

The storyline is that Vickie Guerrero is going to lead Big Show to the WWE Title, which looks like a Triple H vs. Show feud coming up. No word yet where Edge will fit in with everything, but it’s possible he could screw Hardy or Triple H the match at No Mercy and work with whoever he costs the match.

The Good, The Bad, and a Final Grade for Friday's SmackDown

Another week of SmackDown is in the books, this weeks show coming from the Igloo in Pittsburgh, where this year the Penguins played the Stanley Cup vs the champion Detroit Red Wings. The show was full of two women's matches, a pair of long, very well fought matches with Jeff Hardy vs MVP and Shelton Benjamin vs Triple H, and the on-going saga with Undertake vs Vickie Guerrero. Here are some thoughts from the show:

The Good:

* Both the MVP-Hardy and Benjamin-HHH matches were very good. They were long, but both deserved the time they got. Didn't exactly like Khali coming out at the end, thought that was a waste, but I know it's all an attempt to build the scramble challenge at Unforgiven.

* Good to see Taker actually talk again. He's always been good on mic in my opinion, and for him to waste his character by simply grunting "Rest in Peace" every now and then is not enough. He's not Ric Flair when it comes to promos, but then again, he's good enough with his look he doesn't have to be.

* I like the build they are giving Mayrse, who really has been able to come on as of late. They need to continue to develop different divas for title shots, and you can see Mayrse getting one very soon.

* Big Show is headed for a title shot at some point, and while it was a waste for him to come out and lay out the tag teams like he did, I have no issue with him doing it to prove once again that he can be a force.

The Bad

* Not quite following the Taker-Guerrero storyline. I mean, let me understand this. Vickie says she's sorry, and that she wants to make it up to Taker. Taker says no, and that he's going to send her to Hell. In the meantime, Chavo, Bam and Hawkins and Ryder leave her in that room all night, and to top it off - she's locked in till the end (I guess with a cameraman?). Then we have her in the dark, screaming at the end. Not the best of endings to an otherwise pretty good show.

* I realize that Victoria is the diva that never is allowed to win a match, but her match vs the newcomer - Brie Bella, was so one-sided, that once Bella was allowed to win with a weak roll-up, I actually felt bad for Victoria. She's reminding me more and more of Ivory before she left the company a few years ago.

* I was more interested in the promo that Kenny Dykstra cut than the match and eventual loss to Ron Killings, now known as "R Truth." Here's a vote that Killings will win for awhile, then fall into mid-card hell and become a nobody.

Final Grade for the Show: B-

Taker to Take on the Scramble Winner at Unforgiven?

From: PWPIX.net

At the moment, WWE has plans for the winner of the SmackDown Scramble match at Unforgiven to subsequently defend the title later in the night against Undertaker. The idea is that Vickie Guerrero would be giving him the title shot as a peace offering.

Hector Guerrero Says Vickie Not Speaking to Eddie's Family Anymore

In a recent interview with the Miami Herald, Eddie Guerrero’s brother, Hector Guerrero revealed that he has lost contact with Vickie Guerrero:

"Vickie Guerrero is not Vickie Guerrero anymore," Hector said. "She is Vickie Lara. Till death do us part. She was in love with Eddy and he with her. She went into seclusion, and I can respect that."

He added, "We know why she kept the family name, but she's not reached out to us. She is loved by us, and we wish her the best. We just wish should we love us back and return the gesture of communication."

Hector Guerrero also spoke on working in TNA with LAX, the Guerrero family and more.

Quick Thoughts on Tonights Great American Bash PPV

Tonight the WWE presents the "Great American Bash" a 7-match card with the main event being a WWE Title match with Edge vs WWE Champ Triple H. The card also will have C.M. Punk's biggest WWE match to date, a World Heavyweight Title match with him as champ defending vs Batista. Many feel that Punk's title run will be short, while I personally would like to see another few months of him with the strap to see what he can do.

The rest of the card is ho-hum to say the least. Shawn Michales vs Chris Jericho will be good, as it usually is, the 4-way Tag match should be okay as long as they don't let too much comedy with Finlay and Hornswoggle get involved. The Divas title match could actually be a bit of a shocker as it should be pretty good with two good ladie wrestlers. The ECW match with Mark Henry (c) vs Tommy Dreamer will probably be mostly a squash with Henry walking away with an easy win.

The NY Brawl with John Cena vs JBL should have a bunch of big bumps, and it should wrap up this feud. All in all, an okay card, I don't see Edge winning the strap, and my concern is that coming out of Friday nights ending of SmackDown you'll see Vickie get involved and cost Edge the win. Bottom line is let these two wrestle and don't let too much outside stuff get involved, but it probably will.

John and I will have the Let's Talk Wrestling Great American Bash Post Match show tonight after the PPV, and we'll be on the site all night with the ShoutBox! in full effect for your thoughts and comments.

Highlights of Jim Ross' Latest Blog Entry

Jim Ross is back with another blog entry from his official website, Below are some highlights.

** Please note that the final highlight regarding this week's SmackDown! contains a minor spoiler for the show

UFC Star Rampage's Arrest: Sad and unfortunate news for one of my favorite MMA fighters "Rampage" Jackson upon his arrest this week in Southern California for a variety of charges. I have never met "Rampage" but I do know that he is a wrestling fan and is a generally good guy from what mutual friends tell me. It’s just sad to see things like this happen no matter the reason. I hope Jackson can rebound from this incident and get back to the business of fighting which will apparently be in early 2008 due to injuries he sustained in a losing effort, no controversial loss in my eyes, recently against Forrest Griffin. Speaking from experience, incidents like this that make national headlines in a negative vein don’t do the genre any favors especially a genre that is fighting a public perception battle with some uninformed media types and lawmakers. Like pro wrestlers, if the MMA fighters become their own worst enemies due to unfortunate situations like "Rampage" has found himself in then their business’s growth will be adversely affected and the public’s perception will feed right into the nay sayer’s hands.

The UFC vs. Affliction MMA War:
Another MMA thought, does anyone think that the UFC, which is the NFL of MMA, is paying too much attention to the upstart Affliction promotion? Having experienced matters such as this during the WWE/Turner-WCW Monday Night wars, it is without question that competition is good for business and the most important commodity any promotion has, their fans who pay the tab, benefit the most therefore because these fans make a more significant emotional investment to the genre which pushes all MMA promotions to be even more fan friendly and to do a better job in matchmaking and promoting. From where I sit and it’s only one man’s opinion, the UFC should simply tend to UFC business and let the Affliction promotion run it’s course as the UFC has a significant head start in any perceived race and one would think that there is enough Global business to go around for multiple promotions to make money. If there is not, the consumers will make that known early in the race. Competition between brands should also be great for the fighters who will have multiple places to earn a living and maximize their short windows of opportunity.

Socializing with Ric Flair: It was nice socializing with Ric Flair and many of his immediate family after Smackdown at the Westin Hotel bar. "Naitch" is still one of a kind, is happy, and enjoying life and has many unique and perhaps headline making opportunities ahead of him that will play out soon. And no, I am not going the "spoiler" route with this info in this space but, as a huge Flair fan, and without resorting to hyperbole I was extremely interested, as will many of you, in the potential of some of Ric’s future opportunities.

This week’s SmackDown: Friday Night Smackdown is a unique broadcast and one that I am a nxious to watch after the WWE TV folks finish their edits and production enhancements. The common thread that runs through the show is the "Reception of Edge and Vickie’s Wedding" which certainly seemed to have have its "moments" including the final few moments of the broadcast. We also had some intriguing wrestling bouts including a Hardy vs. Hardy match that completely surprised me as it relates to the direction the bout took.

Small Hint on Where the Edge/Vicki Storyline is Headed

Source: Wrestling Observer Newsletter

At the WWE stockholders meeting two weeks ago, one stockholder complained about the Edge & Vickie Guerrero storyline on SmackDown to Vince McMahon. The stockholder asked where WWE was going to draw the line on it. In what appears to be a hint to where it's going, McMahon said that it was a love and relationship story, but that it may not turn out like one in the end. McMahon then went on a tangent saying how in real life, everyone isn't all good or evil, but rather, shades of gray.

SmackDown Preview from WWE.com

Preview:Crowning a champion?
May 23, 2008

The stage was set for Undertaker or Edge to walk out of Judgment Day as the new World Heavyweight Champion. However, things didn’t go as planned for either Superstar. Although Undertaker defeated Edge, it was by count-out. So – as SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero reminded a chorus of booing fans – the title remains vacant. Judgment Day results…

However, WWE.com has learned Guerrero will kick off Friday Night SmackDown with huge news regarding One Night Stand. Will it involve the ongoing struggle for the title?

Will Edge continue to rely on his cohorts, including fiancée Vickie Guerrero, to help him in his quest to reclaim the gold? Are chinks starting to show in the armor of people the Ultimate Opportunist has surrounded himself with? Last Friday on SmackDown, Bam Neely & Chavo Guerrero opted to walk away from partners Edge, Vickie, Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder before a Handicap Match against The Phenom. What will Chavo & Bam do this Friday?

WWE.com has also learned that former SmackDown Assistant General Manager Theodore Long will be a guest on MVP’s VIP Lounge. What will Long have to say about his action on last week’s SmackDown – when he quit so that Guerrero could not fire him?

Batista vowed to hurt Shawn Michaels if The Animal found out HBK faked an injury in their match at Backlash. Recently on Raw, HBK finally admitted he did feign his injury. At Judgment Day, Batista reminded HBK of his warning to hurt him – and it would happen when he least expects it. If and when The Animal does deliver, will HBK be ready for him?

Witness all the fallout from Judgment Day on Friday Night SmackDown at 8/7 CT on The CW Network.

SmackDown Preview for Tonight from WWE.com

Preview:
Chasing the title
May 9, 2008

Although SmackDown General Manager Vickie Guerrero stripped Undertaker of the World Heavyweight Championship, The Deadman has the opportunity to regain the gold in a title match with Edge at Judgment Day. The Ultimate Opportunist earned the spot after winning last week’s Championship Chase to Judgment Day. Read the full story…

But now that the GM has angered The Deadman, will he wait until the big pay-per-view encounter to unleash hell, or will he bring pain to some poor soul on this Friday’s SmackDown? And as for the Ultimate Opportunist – after losing to Undertaker at both WrestleMania XXIV and Backlash – what measures is he willing to go to recapture the gold?

As Judgment Day approaches, what might we see from last week’s Championship Chase participants, including United States Champion Matt Hardy, Big Show, Batista, Finlay and Montel Vontavious Porter. With Edge and Undertaker guaranteed a match at the big pay-per-view encounter, who might be next? And what about SmackDown’s undefeated Superstars, Vladimir Kozlov and Natalya? Can they keep their streaks alive?

Find out the answers to these questions and more on Friday Night SmackDown at 8/7 CT on The CW Network.

Edge and Guerrero Storyline Making Waves Backstage?

Sources say that some people backstage in the SmackDown locker room are uncomfortable with the way the current Edge and Vickie Guerrero storyline is going. However, Vickie is said to be doing fine and enjoying being in the locker room and a part of the show every week. There is no heat on Edge for his involvement in the storyline.

A lot of people are worried how Vickie and her daughters feel about the angle but people say Vickie has told anyone who asks that she thinks her late husband Eddie Guerrero would be fine with the storyline.

SmackDown Preview for Tonight from WWE.com

Batista’s World Heavyweight Championship will be on the line when he squares off against Edge this Friday night on SmackDown. And considering The Animal has never beaten the Rated-R Superstar any time they’ve battled over the gold, the stakes have seemingly never been higher.

Edge returned to SmackDown in controversial fashion last week, especially after revealing his “love connection” with General Manager Vickie Guerrero. But when Vickie granted the Rated-R Superstar a title opportunity for this week, her decision caught the ire of both The Animal and Undertaker, who displayed his disgust for the loving "partnership" by delivering a Tombstone to Guerrero during the “Cutting Edge” segment.

Before he steps into the ring to challenge Batista for the World Heavyweight Title, Edge will kick off SmackDown Friday night with an update on his lover. Will the Rated-R Superstar reveal any further details of the amorous relationship between himself and SmackDown’s General Manager? Does he show any remorse for not coming to the aid of the woman he loves last week?

Also on SmackDown, United States Champion MVP will team with ECW’s Big Daddy V to take on the team of Rey Mysterio & Kane. MVP defeated Rey last week on SmackDown, while at Tuesday’s ECW on Sci Fi, the Big Red Machine fell hard in an Extreme Rules defeat to The Dominating Force in WWE. Can Kane & the Master of the 619 overcome the odds together and find a way to win this Friday night?

As the partnership between SmackDown & ECW continues to be a monstrous success, ECW Champion CM Punk will once again see SmackDown action Friday night. Punk defeated Jamie Noble the last time he appeared on The CW Network, and he continues to impress with the ECW Title around his waist. Who will stand against him this week on SmackDown, and will they simply “Go To Sleep”?

As for Noble, the cruiserweight Superstar defeated Chuck Palumbo in what many consider to be a huge upset last week. This Friday, the two will square off again, and while Palumbo looks to bounce back from the loss, Noble hopes to prove that last week was no fluke. Who will have their hand raised when these two Superstars go one-on-one once more?

Find out the answers to these questions and more Friday night at 8/7 CT on The CW Network.
