Heyman Comments on Punk

Paul Heyman finally spoke on CM Punk and his RAW promo from a few weeks back. Heyman wrote:

“It’s been 20 days since @CMPunk turned the wrestling world and WWE Universe completely upside down w/ his performance. It’s not what @CMPunk said, it’s the realism with which his promo was delivered. HE felt it. So did millions of fans, too. @CMPunk is not the voice of the voiceless, he’s the voice of today’s generation! @CMPunk is cool and bad ass, yet he’s a man of principle. He translates to grownups and kids alike. I’M A @CMPunk GUY!”

Paul Heyman Unveils "Paulie" Awards

From: The Sun

AS 2008 draws to a clean finish, let's look back on the people and events that provided the biggest impact on the wrestling, MMA and boxing industries over the last 12 months.

Keep in mind, the global economy is going to take its effect on available spending, which means pro-wrestling, the sweet science, and Mixed Martial Arts are all going to be in heavier competition with each other for the entertainment customer in 2009.

With wrestling, MMA, and boxing promotions all fighting over the ever-elusive pay per view, live gate, and merchandise piggy bank, it's time to realise that each industry has an effect on the other, at least for now.

So The Paulies are open to anyone who could or can influence a consumer's choice as to where to spend that available money.

The impact player Paulie award: Brock Lesnar

Nobody made an impact this year quite like my former "client" in WWE, the current UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

UFC president Dana White marketed Lesnar as the fake sport outsider coming into the very real world of ultimate fighting. The results of their marketing? Lesnar was the single biggest revenue-grossing attraction on pay-per-view this year.

Heyman on the New WWE and Who's the Best Heel

Source: The UK Sun

A new article in the UK Sun, written by Paul Heyman, discusses the current state of WWE and who he thinks is their best performer. The following are excerpts from Heyman's column:

"There's a tangible buzz surrounding World Wrestling Entertainment programming right now. They're shaking things up."

"While "new" for the sake of "new" is not good, the statement being made by WWE to its audience is: "We're taking chances, we're trying new things, we're giving the ball to new players and seeing who scores."

"(Edge's) charisma alone could carry an entire show, and, bluntly, he's had Smackdown on his shoulders for longer than most people realize but (Adam) Copeland's portrayal of the scheming, manipulative, opportunistic Edge is played in such a way that you simply want to see him get beat or perhaps more importantly, beat up.

Paul Heyman's Thoughts on Jim Ross Moving to SmackDown

Paul Heyman's comments in The Sun about the draft and the moving of J.R. to SmackDown:

VINCE McMahon overshadowed his own draft this week. That's nothing new.

He always aims a big stunt that people didn't expect. A shock, even for those who have come to expect the unexpected.

And Vince delivered on that concept, but in a completely different way than he anticipated.

Vince got some, but not a great deal of attention (yet) with the latest "Who Shot JR" remake with the chairman once again playing the assailed party.

What stole the show was the blockbuster announcement and behind-the-scenes secrecy of the drafting of the other JR to Smackdown.

Apparently, no one told Jim Ross that he was moving in advance.

He was, from all accounts, caught off guard by the graphic going up on the Titantron.

While surely the very top performers who were switching brands were given a heads-up over their change in assignment, not so for JR.

Paul Heyman Speaks Out About ECW Announcing Change

Mike Adamle is Truly Awful

OH BOY. I thought this was going to be a quiet week. No such thing, I guess.

In a decision that really threw everyone for a loop, WWE Chairman Vince McMahon and Executive Producer Kevin Dunn pulled Joey Styles from the position of ECW play-by-play announcer, and replaced him with the indescribably amateurish Mike Adamle.

The reaction was immediate. Even those who never saw Joey in the original Extreme Championship Wrestling were outraged.

Adamle's performance was so terrible, it drew an intense reaction from even casual fans who couldn't possibly care less, and who were ready to take a baseball bat and smash their television sets after listening to his butchering of the program.

I'm not being overly hard on Mike Adamle. It's the old joke about Vince Russo going to WCW. Russo's booking did such damage to the promotion, people in the industry actually believed Vince McMahon sent him to WCW to kill the company.

Latest from the Jim Ross Blog Entry

From Pro Wrestling Insider:

Jim Ross has posted latest blog entry, giving his thoughts on a number of topics (including Britney Spears) and answering some questions from readers of his site. You can read the full blog by clicking here. Here are some wrestling related highlights from this entry:

- Many fans were disappointed that Ric Flair was not on Raw Monday and I don’t know why he wasn’t but I do know that many fans are talking about the Flair retirement scenario wherever I travel. Hopefully “Naitch” will make an appearance next Monday when Raw originates from Mobile, Alabama. From what I can tell it would see that Raw goes full time HD in two weeks.

- I received a nice email Tuesday from Bret “The Hitman” Hart, who is relaxing in Hawaii after his exhausting book tour. Bret and I are going to try and hook up one day soon and he has been kind enough to be willing to provide us some “Hitman” gear for our next J.R.’s Family Bar-B-Q, which is opening in Moore, Oklahoma in April. I have not spoken to a single individual who has read Bret’s book who hasn’t said that the book wasn’t simply awesome. I can’t wait to read it and the one common denominator regarding the book is that it is honest. Some wrestling books I have read were so bogus it was embarrassing for all involved, even though many of the less than honest and self serving publications still made the author some pretty good bucks.

- Wrestling promos were much better when wrestlers were provided bullet points and then went on their own instincts and passion rather than have someone try and script what the wrestlers should say.

- No one is irreplaceable – not even The Undertaker. Nonetheless, The Undertaker’s legacy will live forever in the WWE.

- I think that older stars can be effectively used to help create awareness for the younger stars, if it is efficiently presented. If Ron Simmons’ air time for saying “damn” is retarding the growth of younger wrestlers, then something is really wrong. I would like to see the WWE utilize Arn Anderson and Dusty Rhodes in verbal roles as well. That’s just me.

- When wrestlers are put in a position to be B level actors, at best, or comedians, it oftentimes falls flat. Many people have their own visions for the product. And mine is reality based physicality, spiced with natural verbalizing. OVER THE YEARS WATCHING WRESTLERS ASSUME THE ROLES OF BAD ACTORS IS UNCOMFORTABLE.

- Candice is due back in January as I last heard, but Helms is more likely to return in 4-6 months from neck surgery. I have heard that Helms is doing better. The first few months of his recovery have been challenging.

- On why he watched the monitors as opposed to the ring during a show: "I watch the monitors because they show me the same thing that you see at home, and that is what I am paid to describe."

- For any fan to compare Jeff Hardy to HBK isn’t fair to Jeff. HBK has a long body of work that will live for years to come. Jeff needs to put several years of great matches together before he can be compared to Shawn Michaels, in my opinion. However, there is no one hotter than Jeff Hardy in the WWE, as we speak. I hope Jeff’s dreams come true, for sure.

- On whether WWE is paying Paul Heyman not to work for TNA: "I never knew that Heyman was being paid to sit home and to not go to TNA. Whoever said Heyman wanted to go to TNA or if TNA wanted Heyman?? Paul is creating projects for film and TV as I understand it. He called me on January 3 to wish me a happy birthday, but I missed his call."
