Rapid React - WrestleMania XXVII

The event at the Georgia Dome has been done now for about three hours, but there's still a buzz in the air here in the Peach state over the over 70,000 that took in WrestleMania XXVII.

The event was a middle of the road Mania in my opinion, but to me the crowd got what they wanted - which was a John Cena loss, a lot of The Rock, and even a surprise win by Edge to keep the World Heavyweight Title.

Here's some thoughts about the event from start to finish:

* Figured the Rock would open, but was hoping that they wouldn't overuse him all night, and at times I felt they did. We didn't need the Mae Young skit with him, and the Pee Wee Herman thing was kinda goofy.

* So you give me too much backstage and do the following - make the US Title worthless by making Daniel Bryan and Sheamus a dark match, a built up 8-man tag go 90 seconds and the wrong guys win, and the odd finish to the Cena-Miz match with of all things, a double count out? Strange booking indeed.

* Didn't like at all having Edge-Del Rio on first. Why? Crowd was dead for a lot of the night IMO, and even this opener wasn't enough to get them going after they shouted too long for The Rock. Liked the match, felt totally that Del Rio would win, and was surprised he didn't. Convinced that he will get the belt soon though, and it's a matter of time as Edge gets back on the winning Mania track.

* So tired of Rey Mysterio's act, time for him to go away. Was glad after last years push for him to beat CM Punk they allowed a guy that needs a big win like Cody Rhodes to go over on him. Had no real issues with this match and where it was on the card.

* 90 seconds for the 8-man tag match?! The Corre is a team that I think is getting a solid push on a show that needs stars in SmackDown, and not only don't you give them time, you bury them with a 90-second loss. Total blunder here. Not that it matters, but Vlad doesn't even come to the ring with his pals?

* Enjoyed the Randy Orton vs CM Punk match, though again I felt that Punk should have won this. Orton doesn't need a push like Punk, and if Nexus is going to get over, why have their leader lose after basically dominating the whole match? As a whole, I liked the match and think they will continue this feud.

* The Hall of Fame Class of 2011 was good, as we knew it would be, and it was a cool gesture having HBK come out solo at the end. Don't want to think too far ahead, but next years class is going to void of a big star unless someone retires or passes away (sorry, had to say it). Unless that is they decide to go with the Host of tonight's show, who is the only big name out there currently not in.

* The Michael Cole vs Jerry Lawler match really killed the momentum of the night from a live standpoint. The crowd popped for Stone Cold, which you knew they would, as well as for old WCW star Booker T, but overall, this was a dud to me. I know that Jerry deserves a Mania match, and as someone that knows him personally, I was happy he got it, but it should have been more than this. It will be interesting to see if Cole still has a job, and what they do with him from here. Was also glad to see Jim Ross and Lawler get to call the rest of the card.

* The Taker-HHH match stole the show - of course. Why not after a mid card that was pretty substandard have a match like this NOT go on last like it should have. I was all for having the Miz-Cena last, but knowing how they were going to end it, they should have made the decision to put this last. Already it sounds to me like they are setting up the WM 28 rematch in Miami, and why not - it was the best thing on the show and deserves an encore.

* Everyone hated the whole Snooki thing, and while I know why the WWE did it, I will give her this - at least unlike Vicki a year ago she pulled off two wrestling moves in the match and got the win. Anyone recall the awful "splash" that Vicki did on Kelly Kelly a year ago in Phoenix? Hate Snooki all you want, but her presence got the company mainstream attention and I wouldn't doubt if a few interested people brought the show just because of her. With that, it was fun as well to see Trish vs McCool.

* So finally a huge anti-Cena crowd gets what they want, which is to see him lose clean. It was a hookey finish, but what did you expect? You were not going to see the Rock NOT come back out, and you were not going to see him help Cena either. So the only thing left was a bad finish, the Rock saving the day, then laying out Cena for the Miz only to then lay out the Miz as well.

* I would be lying if I didn't think the GM bleep wasn't to announce a three-way between Cena, the Rock and Miz at the end, but that would have felt an awful lot like WM 9 when Hulk Hogan worked his backstage magic to get the strap from Bret Hart and Yokozuna. I am glad they left it on Miz for now, and we shall see how much more time the Rock sticks around and what they do with him and Cena now.

* As far as a number in the 1 to 10 scale for this Mania, I really can only give it a 5. The undercard was weak, they botched a couple booking spots, and the night was really all about The Rock getting over on the two stars in the main event, which could backfire if he goes away right away.

* The crowd as well was not that great for the night in my opinion, and I really hope after Miami the company brings the event back up east.

Let's Talk Wrestling's WrestlMania XXVII Predictions

WWE Title Match
John Cena vs. The Miz

All the focus on this match has been how much the Rock will get involved. The build has been on the Rock vs Cena, which is what the company seems to be building towards. One wonders if they are going to do a remake of 14 when they built Mike Tyson to be a heel, then he turned on Shawn Michaels to help Steve Austin. Can't see the Rock helping Cena win, but with the heat on Cena now, they may do it just to get him back over.

Winner: Cena

No Holds Barred Match
Triple H vs. The Undertaker

Many think this will finally be the year the streak ends, more so with HBK being involved somehow. Can't see it. They wanted this to be either Brock Lesner or Sting vs Taker, but settled on HHH after the first two dropped out and they couldn't come to a deal. Taker won't lose here, though I can see there being more and more talk of this streak ending with Taker set to walk away in 1-2 years at 46-47 years old. Here's thinking HBK on accident superkicks HHH to give Taker the tombstone win.

Winner: Undertaker

World Heavyweight Title Match
Alberto Del Rio with Brodus Clay vs. Edge with Christian

Edge was undefeated going into WM 24 vs Undertaker, and has lost three straight since, and tonight will be four. Del Rio truly is the future of the company with a three-year deal inked last year, and he's going to represent the company as the champ for awhile at least. One has to wonder if the curve will be Christian turning on Edge, but that would almost be too predictable. Del Rio does find a way to get a win.

Winner: Alberto Del Rio

Randy Orton vs. CM Punk

Good mid-card match for both, like Rey Mystero's match with Punk a year ago. Orton's stock seems to be heading back up as a top face, and I think Punk takes the fall here with Orton getting one on the leader of Nexus.

Winner: Randy Orton

John Morrison, Trish Stratus and Snooki vs. Dolph Ziggler, Layla and Michelle McCool

Tons of heat at the Hall of Fame for Snooki when they showed the promo, but the WWE got what they wanted with lots of mainstream media coverage of her being in the show. Look for a comedy match that should go about 5-7 min with Stratus wrestling 90 percent for the women, and Morrison and Ziggler getting a lot of mat time as well. They likely will give Snooki the pin, which should go over like a fart at a wedding at the dome.

Winners: John Morrison, Trish Stratus and Snooki

Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett vs. Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella and Kofi Kingston

Odd booking here from the start, as I was amazed Kingston was left off the card, but the company did a good job using Axxess to shoot an angle to have him replace Vlad in his match. The Corre seems to be the growing future of the company, while the team of Show and Kane was thrown together, so give the Corre the win as they continue to develop the team.

Winners: The Corre

Rey Mysterio vs. Cody Rhodes

These two could steal the show if given the time, but as history goes, they won't get more than 5-8 minutes to try and go at it 100 percent. Mystero is talking about leaving, which is why they should give Rhodes the win. Plus they need to build his character up, so if they do the right thing, Rhodes goes over. With that said, you know how it's going to end.

Winner: Rey Mysterio

Special Referee: Steve Austin
Jerry Lawler vs. Michael Cole with Jack Swagger

The King finally gets a Mania match, and it's about time. Of course it's going to be filled with a lot of hijinks and running around with the likes of Swagger and Autsin probably at some point getting into it. No doubt that Lawler wins, and one has to wonder with Cole being in such hot water if they are going to bury him totally to end his time with the company over his anti-gay tweets that the company is feeling the heat on.

Winner: Jerry Lawler

WWE United States Title Match
Daniel Bryan vs. Sheamus

Pretty much just a way to get Sheamus on the card, and a good way, as these two have gone back and forth a few times recently with solid matches. I can see this being the opener, as Sheamus should get over to keep him hot in the heel mid-card slot and also carrying a strap.

Winner: Sheamus

Michaels Teases Being Involved in the HHH-Taker Match

Shawn Michaels teased involving himself in The Undertaker vs. Triple H match at WrestleMania XXVII.

When asked about Triple H ending "The Streak," Michaels said, "I'm not sure I can let him do what I couldn't."

He then commented on whether he plans to interfere in the match, saying, "I'll do everything I can not to stick my nose in. Maybe."

He added, "Do you ever find that you're meanest to the people you love the most? If I ruined his chances of ending The Streak, I'm sure he'd beat the tar out of me at that moment, but I'm sure he'd forgive me eventually."

Michaels' role in the match has not been announced by WWE.

Change To WrestleMania Match Following Injury Angle At Axxes

WWE conducted an injury angle at this morning's WrestleMania Axxess affecting the Eight-Man Tag Team Match at WrestleMania XXVII featuring Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella and Vladimir Kozlov vs. Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater, Justin Gabriel and Wade Barrett.

Following Kozlov's victory over Tyler Reks, The Corre attacked the Raw Superstar. The faction used the steel steps to crush The Moscow Mauler's shoulder against the ring post.

WWE acknowledged the attack on the company website: "Twitter and YouTube has since erupted with photos and videos of the incident. The footage only serves to leave the WWE Universe wondering about Kozlov’s condition, or what condition he’ll be in for the Eight-Man Tag Team Match at WrestleMania."

The angle will play out with Kozlov being removed from the Eight-Man Tag Team Match and replaced by Kofi Kingston. The announcement is not expected to made until the match takes place.

Kingston dropped the Intercontinental Championship to Barrett last week on Smackdown.

Awesome Kong in Atlanta, Doesn't Mean She'll Be at Mania

Awesome Kong, who is signed to a WWE deal, has been spotted in Atlanta. While it hasn’t been confirmed that she will not be debuting, the news that she’s in town doesn’t mean as much as people are speculating. WWE brings in pretty much everyone signed to the company for WrestleMania weekend, whether they’re performing at WrestleMania events or not. This doesn’t mean that Kong won’t debut this weekend but being signed to a WWE deal, she would most likely be in town anyway.

WWE Hoping Mania 27 Brings in One Million Buys

WWE is hoping that the addition of The Rock and Snooki to WrestleMania 27 will help them break 1 million pay-per-view buys. They’re also hoping that the use of social media like Facebook and Twitter will help push buys.

WWE Chief Marketing Officer Michelle Wilson told Multi-Channel News this week that the idea was to do more social media promotion for WrestleMania this year, something more than their traditional TV advertising. Wilson said they were trying to bring back former fans with The Rock and new fans with the Snooki storyline.

Wilson talked about fans being able to go to The Rock’s Facebook page for his response to what John Cena did to him on RAW. She said, “That allows us to continue the storyline even after we’re off the air. It’s really a 24-hour engagement that our fans have with the WWE going into WrestleMania.”

Cody Rhodes Looking to Steal the Show at WrestleMania

Cody Rhodes recently spoke with The Toronto Sun to promote his match with Rey Mysterio at WrestleMania 27. Here are the highlights:

The match with Mysterio:
“I’m not one for false promises, exaggeration or hyperbole. In sports entertainment, you hear a lot of those. But I really believe this match has potential to steal the show. We’re stacked up against some beautiful matches and this is my hometown so that would be an added bonus. It’s our best superstars. I wouldn’t feel comfortable without having a< quality story. I used to think I should be on Mania, but looking back, no, shouldn’t have been. I wasn’t ready."

His “Dashing” nickname:
“It’s always been a running gag. My dad always tells people how good looking I am, with the movie-star looks … that kind of garbage. So (my character) does a lot of things men do every day, (grooming things). I’m fully on board with all of them, and he’d hate to hear this, but a lot of them really come from Randy Orton.”
