Joey Mercury made his WWE storyline return tonight at the Extreme Rules pay-per-view during the CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio match after Serena and Luke Gallows were ejected from ringside. Mercury, sporting a Straight Edge Society hoodie, came from under the ring and slid CM Punk a chair then dropped Mysterio on his face from the apron to the floor, allowing CM Punk to get the win. Mercury went back under the ring.

One idea currently being discussed by the WWE creative team is to have Joey Mercury return on the SmackDown brand as part of CM Punk’s Straight-Edge Society. Mercury was released in 2007 and it is well documented that he had a pain killer addiction, so the angle would likely be played off from this.

Former MNM tag-team member and former Champion Joey Mercury is set to return to World Wrestling Entertainment, according to PWInsider.com.

Mercury was released by the company in 2007 and retired in 2008, reportedly due to injury issues. He is slated to be on SmackDown, which is where his former tag-team partner John Morrison is also.

Former WWE star Joey Matthews (a.k.a. Joey Mercury) has decided to retire from professional wrestling business.

In recent weeks he was trying to create buzz for a possible return to WWE, but it was reported that the company had no interest in him. He is at the crossroads and believes it's time for him to decide what he wants to do with his life. Matthews has spent his life doing nothing but wrestling and feels that now is the time to determine what direction to take in life and to let go of things in his past.

Matthews was scheduled to appear an indy show last week, but pulled out.

One source close to all parties involved reports that former World Heavyweight Champion CM Punk is one of the main people trying to bring back Joey Mercury to WWE. Apparently the two are long-time friends and Punk has been going to bat for Mercury with WWE management. Punk has taken on sort of a “sponsor” role to Mercury and the say Punk’s influence has rubbed off. It looks like the rumors of Mercury’s return to WWE are indeed true.

At a Maryland Championship Wrestling show this past Saturday, former WWE Tag Team Champion Joey Mercury cut a promo saying he was going back to WWE along with former ECW Superstar Christian York. Kevin Nash was also asked about his contract status with TNA by a fan. Nash said if TNA gives him the money that he wants then he will stay and if not, he will leave. Below is an e-mail sent in on Sunday from reader Everett who was at the show:

Last night MCW held their monthly show and I got a couple of news bits for you. This is my first hand report not second hand from someone else. Joey Matthews during an in ring promo said that he was going back to WWE in December along with partner Christian York. Joey said he spoke with John Laurinitis earlier in the day and he was going back as Joey Mercury.
